Gill-Montague School Committee Unanimously Names Softball Field for Coach Gary Mullins

GILL — October 25, 2022 — Gill-Montague School Committee unanimously names softball field for coach Gary Mullins after 43-year career. The committee voted 9-0 at its October 25 meeting to designate the Turner's Falls High School softball field the Gary Mullins Softball Field on the Eddie Bordeaux Athletic Fields, honoring a coach whose program has won 10 Massachusetts state titles — the most in state history. Community advocate Adam, speaking on Mullins's behalf, said the coach "truly cares about each and every one of the young adults that have played for him" and noted plans for a granite plaque and a small community gathering area near the field. The committee also approved four of six MASC delegate assembly resolutions, rejecting 8-1 a resolution to restore local control to Lawrence, Holyoke, and Southbridge schools by July 2023, and tabled a vote on a Collaborative for Educational Services capital reserve fund backed by $5 million in forgiven federal PPP loan money, with members citing unanswered questions about whether surplus funds might instead be returned to member districts.
